I`m really liking this thread.. People if you are afraid of writing in english because you dont know the correct spelling of the words, please write what you want to say anyway, we can help you to improve your writing, we can correct you and we can give you all the help you need!!
I really hope this kind of thread become more often here, we could have car discusions only in english, (of course the point of this would be practice our english) and for the ones who dont understand english we could make another thread about the same in spanish.

Friends thanks for the initiative of making threads like this and I hope to learn very much here, and please If I have any misspellings or non sense sentences, etc, feel free to correct me, I will appreciate that very much.

Good idea...my biggest problem with English is maybe my grammar I kindda (kind of) suck at that...

GREETINGS!!!
English grammar is just like spanish grammar. Commas, periods, etc. Maybe what you mean is spelling, which is how you write the word.

You wrote it thinking in Spanish, I know it's difficult to think backwards to write in English but when you learn it is so much easier.

Just remember the way El chavo del ocho described the english language...

Good idea I think that may bigest problem is that i don´t have a good vocabulary, i don´t know how to say many words in english.

My other problem is that i study english many years ago so i forgot a lot of things like grammar and the writing. this is other reason to say that this is a good Thread becouse many of us doesn´t practice.

Who made that test?? Is it me or some "verbs" don't match the possible answers. If this is the case I doubt this can be used for learning...

Those are daily expressions and INDEED they are very helpful, i find them very useful, continue sharing those quizzes please

One of the best things you can do is just watch a film in english, without subtitles... try to understand, then, watch it again with subtitles.. it´s the best "ear-training" you can do...

Sure, that's a good technique, you can also try to set the SAP mode on your TV, in some channels the audio changes to it's un-traduced version, so you can watch your favourite TV show in English

i think is better all the way to watch the movie in english with the subtitles on, that way you can practice and see if you're wrong or in some cases the mistakes the people in charge of the subtitles made. But that's just my point of view. Mis 2 centavos

Business English Idioms

Let's talk about business English idioms and what they mean.

Here's the first one: a ballpark figure.

Can you give us a ballpark figure? Can you give us an estimate?

Here's another way to use "ballpark".

Yes, that price is definitely in the ballpark. Let's set up a time to meet so that we can talk about this in more detail.

ballpark - This refers to a baseball park. If a price, a number, or a quantity is "in the ballpark", it is within one's requirements.

I think it's about time we raised the bar around here.

raise the bar - raise the standards for good work and achievement

Here's another one u might heard some one say, "Come on, people! Let's turn up the volume here."

He meant let's start making more phone calls and making some sales.

I can't believe it. Joe really dropped the ball on the New Bridge Electronics deal. I thought it was a sure thing.

drop the ball - be responsible for a failure, failed effort, or failed attempt

bang for the buck

MEANING:
value for the money spent

EXAMPLE:

We were able to get a big bang for our buck when we advertised on the Internet.

"His handshake is like a wet jellyfish."

He is weak and indecisive. He's not the type of person you can trust.

Re: Improving English: (only serious stuff allowed) read, write, comment and discuss.

Here is another expression that intrigues me.

as i computer technician.. i am always in contact with people having trouble with their computers

and there's an expression that people use.. that it's hard for me figure out why they use it that way..

so here's the expression..

yeah, my computer was working fine but now it won't turn on

or my computer won't recognize the hard drive.. or my computer won't pick up my ipod.. etc, etc..

it means.. that the issue the are having with their computer is occurring at that moment which means, present.. so i just don't get why do they use.. won't.. instead of doesn't

i mean the most logic translation i can think of is.
as an example:

my computer won't turn on = mi computadora no va a encender

my computer doesn't turn on= mi computadora no enciende

but the first one is what people use even though it doesn't look like being present..

i don't know what do u think?
