At long last, here it is. The first images of the production-spec McLaren P1 have been released, and as we told you back in December, the only visual differences between it and the show car are the new vents ahead of the front wheels and the mesh insert at the rear of the engine bay. You already know that the car delivers an insane 903 combined total horsepower from its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 and electric motor. Now we have the performance numbers.

One peek inside the P1 in New York told us that "serious" was going to be an apt descriptor of McLaren's performance champ. Now we have details of the powertrain, and that long-rumored electric motor? Yeah, it's there, backing up a couple of turbos and the M838T V-8 that's already done duty in the MP4-12C.

If you're disappointed that there's nothing more exotic under the hood that a twin-turbo hybrid V-8, maybe the quoted total power output will help ease your ennui: 903. That's 727 from the V-8, and an additional 176 from the bespoke electric motor.

Expect McLaren to get the combination right, using the all torque, all the time character of that DC motor to compensate for any lapse, however momentary, in boost. Don't expect AWD, however. The electric motor and V-8 both operate only on the rear wheels, through a seven-speed gearbox. And if you're wondering about the added bulk of a battery, rest easy: McLaren's managed to coax the pack down to just 211 pounds.

And for kicks, you can drive 6.21 miles in E-Mode with just the electric motor, something no P1 owner will do, ever.

And they're ridiculous.

Zero to 62 mph: Under 3 seconds
Zero to 124 mph: Under 7 seconds
Zero to 186 mph: 17 seconds, max
Top Speed: 218 mph (electronically limited)

The automaker calls out the 17-second figure as being 5 seconds better than the godlike McLaren F1 was able to achieve, alleviating any concerns that the new hypercar wouldn't be able to adequately fill its forebear's shoes. Total P1 production will be capped at 375 cars globally, and in the U.S., they'll carry a price tag of $1,150,000.

What we learned about the 2014 McLaren P1 in NYC

Supercar visits the Big Apple, shows off its still-secret interior to customers

Last week, McLaren brought the P1 supercar to New York for a private showing attended by current and potential customers and the local media. As Road & Track's guy in NYC, I was there. The car on hand was the same orange non-runner shown at the P1's debut in Paris, but I saw firsthand that it does have a full interior, and we got the lowdown on the final visual changes to expect when the final product debuts. A few takeaways:

The interior is all business. I know because I saw it. But photos weren't allowed. Sorry. Credit the presence of potential customers for the impromptu cockpit revelation. Someone with the requisite liquidity asked to have a look inside, and the next thing you know, the driver's-side scissor door was swinging forward. What it revealed was a pair of wicked-looking race-style buckets, lots of dry carbon fiber (a matte-finish look), and a purposeful layout that's in line with the approach McLaren took with the MP4-12C. The glass roof panels are split by an overhead console that gives the P1 almost a T-Top feel from the inside. The production car's roof glass won't be as darkly tinted as the show car's either, since it won't need to hide the interior from prying eyes. Ditto the glass panel over the engine compartment; it's opaque on the show car, but will let you see the engine in the production car.
Look for two subtle visual changes. The show car and the production car are essentially one and the same, but you'll find two small detail changes on the latter. McLaren is adding vents to the front fenders ahead of the wheels to further clean up airflow in that area, in keeping with the fanatical approach to air management taken with the car overall. The other change involves the grillework at the rear. Right now, it's a temporary blackout panel with a thick grid pattern adding detail. The production car will use the same mesh pattern you see at the trailing edge of the roof in this photo. It'll provide a great view of the engine and all the associated plumbing from behind while also providing an escape for a lot of the air the car's myriad vents collect.
The fuel filler is on the roof One of the little "Easter Eggs" that was shown was the location of the fuel filler, which hides under a trapezoidal panel on the roof's driver's side.
On sale in late 2013 or early 2014 With that in mind, McLaren said that the P1 in final production trim will debut at one of the major European shows in 2013. That boils it down to either Geneva in March or Frankfurt in September. As such, the safe bet is Geneva, because that'll give McLaren several months to ramp up the hype machine in earnest ahead of the anticipated on-sale window.
In person, the McLaren P1 is striking example of form-equals-function styling, and there's a certain giddiness evident when the McLaren people talk about their new flagship. Everyone there knows the F1 is an icon that set the bar almost impossibly high for its eventual successor. But in the P1, they clearly believe they have a driver's car that will set new benchmarks. And they're excited. That rubs off.
