Competes with: Honda Civic Si, Volkswagen GTI, Mazdaspeed3
Looks like: A slightly spruced-up Sentra
Drivetrain: 177-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder with continuously variable automatic transmission or 200-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder with six-speed manual transmission; front-wheel drive
Hits dealerships: March 2007
MSRP: $20,000 (SE-R Spec V, est.)
Riding a wave of compact performance cars introduced in the past two years, Nissan unveiled the Sentra SE-R for 2007. The SE-R builds on Nissan's redesigned Sentra with a larger engine, new wheels and various exterior changes. The sedan comes in two flavors: the 177-horsepower SE-R and the 200-hp SE-R Spec V.
The Spec V competes with the Honda Civic Si, the Volkswagen GTI and the Mazdaspeed3, among others.
Exterior
For better or worse, the Sentra SE-R is free from most of the outlandish ground effects used on some competitors. Modifications include a new diamond-mesh black grille, a dark lower air dam and accentuated fog lights with chunkier borders. In back, a small spoiler sits atop the decklid, and the taillights sport a darker finish.
Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on both models. The SE-R Spec V includes a sport-tuned suspension and a rear cross-brace for flatter cornering. A limited-slip differential is optional.
The total length for both cars is up 0.3 inches over the base Sentra. Width remains the same, and the SE-R versions are shorter by 0.4 inches.
Interior
The front seats have larger side bolsters and red stitching, and SE-R logos are embroidered in the backrests. Other features include aluminum pedals, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and two additional gauges over the center controls — one to measure oil pressure and another to measure lateral acceleration. The Spec V adds red seat belts and a leather-wrapped shift knob.
A six-speaker CD audio system is standard. A 340-watt Rockford Fosgate stereo is optional, as is a moonroof.
Under the Hood
The Sentra SE-R shares its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Nissan's larger Altima. In the Sentra, it makes 177 hp and 172 pounds-feet of torque and works with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Although the transmission has no fixed gear ratios, a pair of steering wheel paddle shifters can simulate them.
Thanks to a revised compression ratio, new cam profiles and improved airflow, the SE-R Spec V's 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 200 hp and 180 pounds-feet of torque.
Safety
Active head restraints, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are standard. Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes are standard. In the SE-R Spec V, the front discs are 0.9 inches larger.
