My thred from Dubberz
So everyone thinks Im nuts but i decided to do it anyways..
I measured up a 325 and found it is really not far off from a golf in terms of wheelbase and track width. turns out the rear wheels are actually tucked in about .5 inches on both sides compared to the golf
started with this:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-10-11093732cropped.jpg
and got this:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-10-20213146.jpg
then this happened:

then I took apart the golf

and now comes the fun part
this is a picture of the BMW trans - the bellhousing. I will be grafting on a vr bell housing soon
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-11-13202737.jpg
and here is the fitment for the rear so far. the floor is partially welded in now. I will be bolting up the suspension and putting it on the ground to see how it sits soon. the floor sits higher then some of the picures show I ended up moving it up as far as i could because I discovered 325's have huge toe in issues when you lower them too much in the rear. since i want it to look good and drive nice without retarded camber/toe in the rear I decided to move the floor up as much as i could. It sits almost exactly at the same height as the factory vw floor..

how the engine will sit roughly

Finally getting somewhere, just need to finish the rear of the floor and then i can move onto the bottom.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-12-03202004.jpg
so the floor is welded in now on all sides. I am still debating on what to coat it with. I want to seam seal it and use a good rust inhibiting paint like POR 15 but you cant put seam sealer under por15. and putting it over its quite a task since i would have to sand down the high gloss finish of it....
I have moved onto the transmission now and converted my welder to aluminum. I must say it is a lot harder to weld than steel but hey it works
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/IMG_0273.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/IMG_0276.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-12-13230007.jpg
here is the concept for the transmission. the only tricky part is going to be fitting the throw out bearing for the clutch. I can ALMOST use the stock vw one but the slave cylinder doesn't quite fit. My idea is to lengthen the actuator part equally on both sides so I don't change the throw distance. the rest of this will be straight forward welding the bell housing to the trans since i can use the vw clutch and pressure plate which means the stock starter works
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2013-01-02210653.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/IMG_0266.jpg
( I will cut the diff part off the bellhousing next)
and here is my idea for a fuel tank its from a Mercedes 190-E. still not sure if it will work but its worth a shot
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-12-18103953.jpg
^ yeah i have done a few tack welds and it needs to be cleaned badly. I will go the extra mile to make it secure soon I'm just waiting on some argon gas for my welder then i will get to it. I was working on it Friday I have the bellhousing tacked on now. took a lot of measuring and fiddling around to make sure the input shaft was perfectly straight and the trans was perfectly square to the engine
I was very happy to find out I will be able to sit the engine under the hood. this is all due to the fact that the e30 trans has a super long input shaft. I will actually be able to make a tunnel in the bell housing for the steering rack. so stoked about this as it will save me making a custom hood and a custom steering rack!! :D
edit heres some pics

next step is clean the trans. then I will get to welding it up
Ok so here are some photos of where I am at
This isnt done but its getting closer. I will smooth it out and probably paint it

Here is how the engine has to sit because of the steering rack. there is a small tunnel in the bell housing of the trans where the rack can pass through. It was in my best interests keeping the steering in tact because of the implications that changing it would have on the cars handling and cornering as well as the retarded amount of work involved! It is defiantely benificial to have the engine farhter back in terms of handling. moving it this far back did mean I had to remove a portion of the rain tray and move the pedal cluster over 1.75 inches

(dont mind the tire, when I picked up the wheels one of the tires was installed backwards lol)
here is a few
so i should explain cus the pics suck, the engine is mounted on the original transmission and engine mounts on the k frame as well as the new one i created at the front. there are also 2 transmission mounts which are not quite finished. Drive shaft is sleeved for mock up. I will get more done soon. I have been busy with work and the shop was a disaster so i cleaned it and now i will have to get this thing on 4 wheels, so i can roll it out to swap the engine on my mk3. oh and i am in the works of making a SRI using a mk3 vr lower intake

so here is where I am at.
The Engine and trans are in the car for the last time, the bay is painted. its basically down to details. unfortunately due to the fact that I am moving this weekend the car will not be finished for volksfest
-Car needs
-brake lines
-line locks
-fuel lines
-Fuel cell and pump installed ( I have a 12 gallon cell now)
-drive shaft installed (adapters coming on Tuesday Thanks Matt!)
that should be all it needs to drive still a few things required to race though I will need drive shaft loops and a fire wall for the fuel cell in the trunk
Sorry not many pics but i thought this was a great comparison shot

and now comes the fun part
this is a picture of the BMW trans - the bellhousing.

Finally getting somewhere, just need to finish the rear of the floor and then i can move onto the bottom.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-12-03222610.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/2012-12-03202004.jpg
so the floor is welded in now on all sides.
My idea is to lengthen the actuator part equally on both sides so I don't change the throw distance. the rest of this will be straight forward welding the bell housing to the trans since i can use the vw clutch and pressure plate which means the stock starter works

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s267/maxvw15/RWD%20vr5t%20mk2/IMG_0266.jpg
